Glenn Gould of course had his own way of playing Bach on the piano–fast, sometimes, interpretively modern, nearly always. Evan Shinners, an upcoming pianist on the scene, follows in that lineage with a recent disk devoted to Johann Sebastian’s music for keys entitled @Bach (New Cull). It was recorded live in performance and subsequently has a few minor clams here and there, but that is made up for with an expressive exuberance.

He takes on the B-Flat Partita and the French Suite bwv 816 with zest, performs two Toccatas with improvisations added in an imaginative way, and then joins the SUITES chamber ensemble in a madly dashing version of the Concerto in d minor (bwv 1052) that, again, may not be a perfect performance, but makes up for it in spirit. Tempos are generally pretty rapid and Shinners is in an appropriate fettle. All tends toward the happily tempestuous.

Mr. Shinners has promise and the program keeps your ears in motion throughout.

Evan Shinners is a young pianist with a new live recording of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. He’s said that he wants to bring an air of unexpectedness and spontaneity to the composer’s work; he uses the music of Bach to create a modern experience. Here Shinners discusses his concern for improvisation, the effect of the audience on his performances, and the other music that he was listening to when he recorded @bach.

there are three types of people that wear sunglasses inside:

blind people, assholes, and evan shinners.

at sunrise you may find him reading rameau and drinking whisky,

and he once climbed inside of a piano to play beethoven backwards at the moma. his album, @bach, was released last month.

mniy: if thelonious monk and j.s. bach arrived for brunch on sunday morning, what would you cook for them?

es: i’d encourage them to drink raw eggs and stand on their heads while i sang to them katy perry.

what was the last food you dreamt about?

i had a dream about ray charles appetizers. i tweeted about it actually. we had different singers for lunch, including van morrison dim sum.

what is in your ideal reception spread?

different types of pu-er teas, preferably from 1985-1998, to wash down caviar– mostly black or taiwanese.

if the reception spread sucks, what do you eat after a concert?

i usually waltz with the loal girls and drink japanese whisky alone in my hotel rooms.

When I first gazed upon the cover art and read the New York hype on Evan Shinners, I thought this disc would be a goof, a gimmick, a parody or strictly “jazzy” reduction of Bach originals. I was wrong. Touted as the “new Glenn Gould” of Bach, the Juilliard-trained Shinners has his own ideas, and they seem to compel his devoted audience to listen to what he plays.

It’s a defiantly self-conscious compilation of two live, unedited performances recorded at Juilliard and Rockefeller University. The pianist in charge is Evan Shinners, a Juilliard kid who played on WQXR’s Beethoven Marathon of all the piano sonatas in October. The solo music here is okay,

rough and tumble like you might hear in a parallel universe where Bach is played in brothels.

The tracks that make this essential, however, are the three of the Concerto in D Minor, in which Shinners is backed by a pickup group of Juilliard colleagues called The Suits, in the following bizarre configuration: 2 violins, clarinet, viola, tuba, cello and bass. In doing so, Shinners backs up his claim to reclaim “the unexpectedness and spontaneity that I feel the traditional classical music concert has lost.” @bach. Evan Shinners. CD - Laurence Vittes
