the trio of tommy gardner (drums) ryland kelly (guitar) and evan shinners headlined the eminent art blog “this week in new york”’s 10th anniversary party wednesday night. in an explosive sound with tommy hitting drums at full strength, ryland through his nashville tele, and shinners through a combination megaphone/triton keyboard, the trio gave their upcoming colorado-tour set a run through at fontana’s bar on the lower east side. playing a combination of bach and several new shinners originals, the trio “stole the show” according to one spectator and “clearly demonstrated [their] juilliard training” according to another. according to mark rifkin, organizer of the show and founder of “this week in new york” shinners is “bound to be a star.” for photos of the event click HERE

evan shinners performed a new program of all bach solo piano works this tuesday at barbés bar in brooklyn. playing on a upright piano in a “humble” setting, he pleased the crowd with his wit and humor, calling even the mysterious jazz drummer craig weinrib out of hiding to witness the event. sections of the program will soon be HERE on youtube and included:
preludes and fugues from the well tempered clavier
selections from the goldberg variations
toccata in d major
and the french overture in b minor
the audience consisted of writers in the new york area as well as prominent classical musicians such as michael brown, julio elizalde, juliette salmona and elena urioste. time out magazine called shinners a “bonafide bach-star” and highlighted the concert as a ‘critics pick’ for this week’s events. bassist michael thurber helped shinners celebrate the uniqueness and universal qualities of bach’s music by making a surprise appearance and singing a song with evan.

shinners was interviewed today by “this week in new york” about his two upcoming concerts in the city. join him this week as he and band take on manhattan and brooklyn. interview below or see the post HERE:
twi-ny: you recently played beethoven at moma in a mobile, cut-out piano followed by onlookers who were snapping photos in your face as you all moved around the space together. what was that experience like?
evan shinners: one of my goals is to bring classical music to people in a setting where they would not normally hear it. if someone hears beethoven’s ninth from that piano all hollowed out in an art museum and they appreciate it, it only proves the universality of the great classical composers and speaks volumes about how classical music can reach the masses anywhere outside the concert halls.
twi-ny: what are a bunch of juilliard graduates doing playing punk rock?
evan shinners: well, i wouldn’t call the band punk by any means, and i have my own theories about what classical music of 2011 is and what it isn’t. if i had to briefly touch on that, we play what is closer to classical than what classical pretends to be today. i could argue that for a while. . . . essentially, it is important to know that most of the band did not get their first music lessons in classical or jazz. in fact, three out of five of them started learning rock/pop songs first before taking up their juilliard “callings.” i am lucky that the members can play all styles, and i wouldn’t have it any other way as we often jump from bach to rock within one piece.
twi-ny: your upcoming album, @bach, which will be released later this month, is a collection of live bach works performed on keyboard. what is it that draws you to bach? what about other favorites?
evan shinners: the universality of bach is it. no other music is so adaptable. rappers rap over him, saxophones blow over him, i lift chord progressions directly from his cantatas and make rock songs based on him — his music is perfectly timeless. with bach i can take up all my influences, from [thelonius] monk to eminem, and have them come out in the same piece of bach’s. . . . try doing that with schumann (no disrespect to ol’ robert, though).
twi-ny: what is on your ipod these days?
evan shinners: on the ipod it is either [harpsichordist] wanda landowska or rap.
twi-ny: do you get different types of satisfaction when playing classical music as opposed to when you play pop and rock? how do the very different kinds of audiences, and their energy levels, affect or influence your playing?
evan shinners: i love the rock audiences. i love getting yelled at, taunted, rushed, et cetera. i’m also tired of musicians complaining about noisy audiences — try being bob dylan (or anyone else who dealt with it) and get booed everywhere you go and still play your heart out; i have respect for those musicians who can. a goal of mine: all bach in carnegie hall where everyone sits down with red wine in paper cups, claps between the pieces (gasp!), yells, taunts, boos, screams, riots, mosh pits in the aisles. . . . you want the classical audiences to start growing? try that atmosphere for starters; paganini’s crowds used to be a lot more rowdy than the crowds of today.

shinners and the upcoming classical album were featured today in the lifestyle section of the washington post.
“Johann Sebastian Bach may not be the most obvious Internet sensation, and classical pianist Evan Shinners knows that. But Shinners thinks that too many classical musicians do not leverage the tools available to them. He’s pretty certain the Internet is just as ready to embrace Bach as it is Justin Bieber…” MORE

blogger ashley depoint interviews evan shinners and band about upcoming tour. the article is a reprint from the summer tour of 2010:
classical pianist evan shinners, who thrilled local audiences in winter park last january is returning to the area, no, not for more of his unique interpretations of beethoven, but for his own flavor of music. last january, the juilliard graduated new york local came to colorado as part of a three-month tour spanning new york, boston, california and taiwan. his concert as part of the grand county concert series was the most well attended concert in the series’ history due to his musical reputation and his outreach skills to children: he visited schools in the grand county school district and encouraged them to come to his concert, many of whom did. shinners, like many of his colleagues in the increasingly difficult classical music world, is extending his talents to bringing different audiences to the music, and lately, he and his crew of four talented musicians have been touring america with the message of a universal music.
playing for tips, cd and t-shirt sales, looking always for gas money and a place to “crash,” ryland kelly, tom gardner, george nickson and saxophonist eddie barbash make up what shinners claims to be his, “miraculous suits band.” kelly, gardner and mr. barbash trained at the juilliard school in the prestigious jazz division and the drummer-percussionist george nickson has just been accepted to the masters’ degree on full scholarship. kelly, from detroit, has been a friend of shinners ever since their first year in juilliard in 2004. “i had never seen a piano player like evan before i came to school, he blew my mind with his creativity.” says kelly, and the feeling seems mutual: evan boasts about him narrowly missing the chance to tour with none other than lady gaga in the spring due to his already tight jazz schedule.
and what about the soft-spoken handsome tom gardner? well, shinners himself calls him a “musical myth” claiming “the band didn’t explode until someone of tommy’s caliber stepped in.” gardner went to juilliard for tenor sax, and after being hailed by benny golson as “the most original tenor player in the last twenty years” he put the horn away for his telecaster guitar and his first musical love, rock and roll. what exactly will evan shinners the band play? certainly shinners’ own music, an upbeat blend of bob dylan and ray charles, what shinners calls “music for jack kerouac.” music off their debut album, the much anticipated, “evanshinners. forbeginners.” and everyone in the area is also expecting some classical, especially shinners on j.s. bach, accompanied creatively by nickson, the band’s longest running member, and marimba prodigy who soloed at the kennedy center in washington dc just before joining the tour.
what else could this “miraculous suits band” throw our way? we’ll bite our nails in anticipation and hope evan can keep up his reputation.
evan shinners plays at the circle h lodge, june 11th and 12th at 7:30pm.
$5 at the door.
